An A - Z of Victorian Crime and Culture - H is for...


H is for - Hard Labour... Most longer sentences included an element of hard labour, which was exactly what it sounds like. Adults and children were put to work on anything from breaking rock, to the crank and other similar machines aimed at breaking them by hard work.

H is for - Heavy wet... somebody who drinks excess of malt whiskey becomes wetter, heavier and more stupid with each drink.

H is for - Half inch... to pinch or steal - cockney rhyming slang.

The first of my author interviews - Megan Denby - 'A thistle in the mist'.

This series of interviews is a little different to others, as each question was posed to my ‘victims’ on an individual basis, and in many respects, based on previous responses. This provides a very spontaneous, open, honest, and - I hope, interesting insight as to what it takes to become a writer in today’s world of publishing. I have been very deliberate in my choice of ‘first author interview’ to be published. My choice was actually very easy, as the hugely talented Canadian, Megan Denby, author of the wonderful inaugural novel ‘A thistle in the mist’, came to my attention immediately, when, as a ‘newbie’ I engaged within assorted ‘discussion groups’ for writers, looking for inspiration and answers. Ouch - my first 3 star review...

Well guys; I knew it had to happen at some time, but my first three star review appeared on Kindle pages for 'Jack Ketch's Puppets' over the weekend.  All the rest have been five stars to date. The positives? The lady acknowledged it was great story, and with strong characters, and it would have done better to have gone through a professional Literary Agency to have it properly assessed and edited. I wish! The negatives? It was described as 'poorly written and researched'...OUCH. I have found the spelling mistake she refers to and I admit, I never considered 'okey dokey' to be a fairly recent saying, so let that one slip by...that was the research error! I would have preferred 'poorly written or poorly edited', but that is the cost of putting a book out there for review...it can be uncomfortable! My research, otherwise, I would hope, was sound. I was disturbed, viewing my novel again, that it does contain a larger number of punctuation
