As book #3 grows, a little teaser for my readers.

Book #3 is now growing steadily - another 2k words today!

Last night I settled upon a rather nice title, that will adorn the cover, which I also completed last night.

So, a little teaser, to get the ball rolling...

‘Did you hear that?’ asked Maria, also stirring. ‘I thought it sounded like something on the roof.’

‘I’ll go and have a look around. It’s probably just a cat or a bird that’s roosted for the night, but you never know,’ replied Edward, stepping onto the warm bedside rug, his bare feet brushing the plush pile, the air fresh on his bare legs beneath his nightshirt.

As he stood upright, the door to the bedroom opened slowly, and Edward was confronted by a dark, masked figure entering the room.

‘Stand back, I have a pistol,’ shouted Edward Paget, in fear and in an attempt to frighten off the intruder.

‘Don’t look like it to me, Mister,’ said the intruder, now moving menacingly toward the anxious occupants.

‘What do you want? Just take it and leave us alone,’ screamed Maria, pulling the loose bed sheet up over hair nightdress, protecting her modesty.

‘A little bird tells me you have rather a lot of money on the property, and I’d rather like that, if I may be so bold as to ask,’ said the intruder.

Both Edward and his wife noticed that the man spoke with an American accent. They had spent some earlier years in the colonies on business.

‘We have not much cash here at all. I went to the bank yesterday and paid most of it in, there is only about fifty pounds on the premises,’ said Edward.

‘Open your safe and show me,’ demanded the man.

A series tagline...

I have just added a series tagline to my work.

'What lies buried beneath the cobbles of old Leicester?'

What do you think?

Limited offer - The Borough Boys series - reduced price.

Hey guys;

For a limited period I am reducing the cost of the ebook version of both 'Jack Ketch's Puppets' and 'Death Lurks in Cock Muck Hill', on Amazon Kindle - KDP.

When the changes are authorised, later this morning, both ebooks will be available at a price of £1.92 (Sterling) or $2.99 (US Dollar).

This is the same price as my non-fiction work 'Leicestershire Myth & Legend - in verse'.

All ebooks can be found through links on my Amazon author page...

Marketing woes - The Borough Boys series

Hey guys;

I am a little concerned about my current series 'The Borough Boys'.

For the last couple of weeks they have been slipping down the Amazon Kindle ratings, and I was hoping to see more of an uptake with the summer holidays.

That is really disappointing, so I am seeking feedback and advice.

I have listed some questions below, and would love some honest answers.

1/ Covers.

  • Of books 1 and 2, which has the most eye-catching appeal and why?
  • What attracts you?
  • What puts you off?
  • What would add to their appeal?
2/  Pricing.

  • What do you think of the ebook pricing?
  • Too high? If so what do you think is more realistic?
  • Too low? Ditto.
  • Paperbacks - what do you think is a reasonable price for a paperback today?

Thanks for helping out.

What is an American accent? Some research from book #3!

Hey guys;

Not wishing to give too much away, at this early stage, but one of my suspects in book #3 is described early on, as having an 'American accent'...

So, the research in me began, as I had not considered the question, 'In 1852, what would an American have sounded like?'

The results are fascinating, so I have attached two links which give a great insight into something we probably take for granted, certainly on the British side of 'the pond'.

I love to learn about my new friends in the States and Canada, and this is so interesting!

A first taste of book #3 in 'The Borough Boys' series...

Samson Shepherd sat bolt upright in bed, the sheets around him wet and clinging to the damp film which coated his naked body; his breathing rapid - and for a moment, he struggled to separate dream from reality.

He must have shouted out, and woken himself doing so.

Slowly, Sally opened her eyes, and drew herself up onto her elbow alongside him.

‘You’re having that dream again, Samson. The poor boy has gone, and there was nothing you could have done to change things.’ Sally tried hard, yet again, to reassure her man.

‘I heard yesterday, that old Mr Williams, the man that shot Archie, had been found hanging in the Borough Gaol. He couldn’t live with his guilt any longer, I suspect. Just opened the old wounds up again,’ Shepherd reflected, now coming to his senses, and a little more focused.

‘It’s a hot night, Samson, and you’ve to be at work at six in the morning, so back to sleep with you; give me a hug,’ whispered Sally, as their naked flesh locked tightly together, and kissed him on his forehead, holding his head in her arms against her face until he was asleep again.

New Walk, Leicester - the opening scenes for book #3 in 'The Borough Boys' series

The beautiful houses and Museum of the New Walk area of Leicester. Originally called Queens Walk, or Ladies Walk, and built as a pleasant walkway from the old Borough, up to the racecourse that predates the current Victoria Park.

The walk follows the route of the old Roman 'Via Devana' which ran from Leicester to London.

In 1852 these houses accomodated the cream of Leicester business people. Rich, elegant, this was as good as it got.

Of course, the trouble was - everyone who had nothing, wanted what they had!...

This is the setting for the start of book #3 in The Borough Boys series, which is now, nicely, under way, and hopefully ready for Christmas!

A few more teasers in weeks to come

Chapter one - Book #3 - the first 5,000 words are down!

Well guys; It's amazing what having the will to write does for you. A cold wind has been blowing, so it was nice to shut the conservatory windows and get on with it.

The result - the first 5,000 words of book #3, and still only part way through my proposed chapter one! And, it's changing already as I learn more about showing and NOT TELLING, with some added dialogue and less bland text!

Character ideas I had are also growing fast - Beddows is a really grumpy man today, and Shepherd is having an ear bashing already. Charters has got his back up and there is a definite sense of friction between my Borough Boys. What will happen next?

The first chapter of book three - my target for tomorrow!

Tomorrow I shall rejoin the pathway for serious writers. My research is up-to-date, my photos and videos are now collated and the new video now re-released, and so, my target for tomorrow is the first chapter, at least, of book#3 in The Borough Boys series.

A tale of villainy, new relationships, conflict, death and justice will enhance what you already know about my men Shepherd and Beddows. One or two new characters will make an appearance (are you ready +Eibhlin Morey ?) as things get sticky in 1852 Leicester...

Should be a fun one to write!

Video promotion work in progress

Hey guys;

I apologise for the delay in posting - I have been busy elsewhere, and been out and about with camera and video camera, gathering material for a full introductory / promotional video about 'The Borough Boys' series and other publications.

Technical problems and the fact that I am a dinosaur in so far as IT is concerned these days, it has been an arduous few days.

I now have a pictorial / video timeline constructed, and I have just finished scripting a narration.

Hopefully next week, I will get a few hours to lay down the narration - I tried yesterday, but each time was interrupted by family, dog, telephone or a noisy ice-cream vendor!

Book three is now in full storyline and I will be getting the book written over August and September, with a view to publishing at the end of September / early October. Book four will follow almost immediately, as that too is now in full storyline form...with a target of having that one, and then a 'three story compliation' out for Christmas.

So, I am busy, but not doing a great job at keeping you informed at this site.

Can I remind you that my daily mumbles and mutterings can be found on my Facebook page

I am also ready to engage with an illustrator who has shown her interest in my childrens' book, and hope to give that some time soon, also!

Those voices in my head...

The voices inside my head have finally started, once again. I have been struggling with how to adapt the work I have already under...
