Another question - please be honest and respond!

Hey guys;

My first novel is currently on sale as an ebook at Amazon KDP at a price of approx £1.99 sterling, and $2.99 USD.

For a first novel, does the cost put you off because a) it is too much? or b) it is too cheap and suggests it is cheap?

Please let me know what you think, and at what price you wouod consider buying it (if you haven't already).

  1. I've read a lot of posts, facebook threads, G+ convos about indie pricing, as well as just feedback from readers, and I think $2.99 US is the sweet spot for a full-length indie novel. It's enough not to be giving it away, but inexpensive enough to inspire readers to take a chance. It means the maximum royalty percentage from Amazon while still maintaining an approachable price point, and it doesn't look greedy.

    Good luck with your sales. Would love to hear from you regarding sales and pricing feedback after a while.

  2. Hi Phil, you might like to think about lowering your English price to £1.90 - that way the actual price would come in at under that psychological £2 mark. When you price at £1.99 it goes over the £2 because Amazon add a few pence to the prices we set. Just a thought - the difference in royalties would be negligible.

    1. Hi Anne; Thanks for the response. You will see there are a range of diverse views. Some interesting ones on other sites where I have posted that I am too cheap for serious readers. Need a few days to digest me thinks!

  3. I personally won't buy an ebook under $4.99. If the author does not think it is worth much, why should I read it? In the bestseller lists on Amazon $3.99 to $4.99 is becoming more prominent, $2.99 and under less. To me a price of under $4.99 says please buy me because I am cheap, not please buy me because I have a great story to tell. Read an interesting blog post the other day where the author says that when he sells his ebooks cheaply or gives them away, he receives more bad reviews, because people buy them for the price and not because they are particularly interested in that type of story.

    1. Hi Graham; Thanks for your honesty! I am starting to worry that that is a more widely held view than is made apparent. I am looking at a couple of tweaks and I think pricing may be one of them! Interesting considerations!
